Gholson Lyon

Principal Investigator
Gholson Lyon is on faculty at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is a research scientist at the Utah Foundation for Biomedical Research. Gholson completed his undergraduate education at Dartmouth College, where he studied biochemistry and molecular biology. He received an M.Phil. in genetics from the University of Cambridge, England and a Ph.D. in pharmacology and peptide chemistry at Rockefeller University. He received his M.D. from Weill Cornell Medical College, followed by adult psychiatry training at the New York State Psychiatric Institute/New York Presbyterian Hospital – Columbia. It was during residency that he became interested in the genetic and pathophysiological basis of many neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette Syndrome (TS), schizophrenia and autism. Gholson subsequently undertook child and adolescent residency at the NYU Child Study Center, Bellevue and Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center, during which time he became interested in clinical trials and treatment development for TS, OCD and ADHD. He trained with Dr. Barbara Coffey at NYU, an internationally-recognized specialist in Tourette Syndrome. Gholson started his independent research career in 2009, after finishing clinical residencies in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. In addition to his research on the genetics of neuropsychiatric illnesses, Gholson is focusing on the genetic basis of rare Mendelian diseases and the development of clinical-grade exome and whole genome sequencing.

Jonathan Crain

Lab Technician II
Before joining the Lyon Lab, Jonathan earned a B.S. in Biology from SUNY Albany and an M.S. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biophysics from the University of Minnesota. His thesis research involved the use of spectroscopic and biochemical methods to determine the structural mechanism by which dystrophin, utrophin, β-III-spectrin and related proteins bind to filamentous actin. Since joining the Lyon Lab in 2015, Jonathan has been working to help elucidate the molecular and biochemical mechanisms by which the NatA complex acylates nascent proteins, and to determine the functional impact of acylation on these proteins. When not in the lab, Jonathan spends time with his two cats, attempting to grow unusual house plants, and playing at macro photography.

Alexandra Solowinska

Volunteer

Currently an undergraduate student at Stony Brook University majoring in psychology and health science. She has additional research experience working in computational biology/ physiology and biophysics at Weill Cornell. Her interests are in microbiology and genetics. She also has an interest in clinical work in healthcare. She is on a pre-MD/PhD track.  When not in the lab, Alexandra loves to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends.

Robert Kleyner

Volunteer

Robert is a rising sophomore studying Human Biology, Health, and Society at Cornell University. For the past three summers at the lab, he has used bioinformatics tools to study the clinical manifestations of single nucleotide polymorphisms. Outside of the lab, Robert fences with the Cornell fencing team, and is a member of Cornell Emergency Medical Services.

Alison Sebold

Volunteer

Aly is a senior at Tulane University, where she is majoring in neuroscience and minoring in sociology. She has spent the past two summers in the Lyon lab, where she is helping define the hydrocephalic mouse phenotype and understand the underlying neural mechanisms. She has additional research experience in a behavioral and neurodevelopmental genetics lab at Tulane, and has also spent time volunteering for a nonprofit promoting brain injury awareness and advocacy. Outside of the lab she is an avid foodie, and enjoys running and spending time with friends.
